Hundreds of homes were left buried under rubble when a section of a mountain caved in at 1pm this afternoon.
Colonel Abdul Qadeer Sayad, a deputy police chief of Badakhshan province, said: “At least 400 to 500 people are still under a huge landslide, and they are all believed to be dead. This number may increase.”
Many people were at home when the landslide took place as Friday morning is a day off in Afghanistan.
A mine collapsed and killed at least 17 people in northern Afghanistan on Wednesday.
The mine in Samangan province collapsed while illegal mining was taking place.
