New York’s Statue of Liberty was cast into darkness last night after an “unplanned outage”.
The statue was dark except for the crown and torch, according to WCBS-TV.
The lights returned shortly before midnight local time.
The outage sparked speculation on social media that it was part of today’s A Day Without Women protest against economic and social inequality.

But National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis said the outage was probably related to a project for a new emergency back-up generator.
