Earlier this week Mr Putin apparently “softened” his stance on Ukraine, pledging to withdraw troops form the country’s border. Nato said it was yet to see any withdrawal.
The president also called on pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine to delay their referendum due on May 11 that may lead to the country splitting.
The separatists rejected the idea yesterday and said they would press ahead, heightening fears of renewed clashes with Ukrainian government forces next week.
Andrey Purgin, a senior figure in the the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, said: “This is not our decision, this is the decision of people of Donbas region.”
