Dr Spencer, who was volunteering with Doctors Without Borders, yesterday reported that he had come down with a 103-degree fever and diarrhoea. The doctor was taken by an ambulance crew in full protective equipment to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he is in isolation.
He is the fourth person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the US.
New York health commissioner Mary Bassett said his fiancée and two friends had been quarantined but showed no symptoms. She said the probability was “close to nil” that Dr Spencer’s subway ride would pose a risk. People arriving in the US from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone must report to health officials daily and take their temperature twice a day, which Dr Spencer did.
Britain today succeeded in its goal of getting the EU to commit €1 billion to the fight against Ebola. The UK has pledged a further £80 million, taking its contribution to £205 million.
