The excited children sat in the stalls behind him waving paper hearts mounted on sticks, as judge Patricia Gardner named Andrea Melvin and Dave Eaton as Michael’s legal parents.
In one touching moment during the hearing, each classmate took it in turns to say something about their friend.

“My name is Steven, and Michael is my best friend,” said one child.
“My name is Lily, and I love Michael,” announced another.
The five-year-old and his parents then hit the gavel together to mark the end of the proceedings.
The heartwarming gathering took place on Kent County's annual Adoption Day, during which 37 children were welcomed into permanent loving homes.
“It's Adoption Day at the Kent County Courthouse. 37 children are being lovingly and officially welcomed by their families,” Kent County officials said on Facebook.
“There is not a dry eye on Judge Patricia Gardner's courtroom,” the post added before congratulating Michael and his family on their big day.

Ms Melvin and Mr Eaton have been married for nearly 10 years and were Michael’s foster parents for almost a year before the adoption was finalised, CNN reported.
The proud parents told the broadcaster their son loves to dance and swim, and to play basketball and football.
Michael's mother described how they were inspired to invite the class to attend the hearing after Michael’s teacher Mrs McKee floated the idea of a field trip.
Following the day's celebration, Mrs McKee told local TV network WZZM: “Family doesn’t have to be DNA. Family is support and love.”
