Burden became a household name after reaching the MasterChef final in 1994 and went on to appear alongside Ainsley Harriot in Ready Steady Cook.
The self-trained chef lived in London for nearly 20 years before returning to his native New Zealand as a judge for the country’s first MasterChef series in 2010.
MasterChef judge Simon Gault told the Herald: “He was great to work with. He was never a minute without a laugh or a joke - great sense of humour.”
