Customers at a flagship Apple store were left terrified after a man came in with a samurai sword and started swinging the weapon around.

The man brandished the weapon on a staircase after entering the shop in Manhattan, New York, on Friday at about 4pm local time.

He was reportedly shouting and waving the sword above his head as he descended a spiral-staircase into the store, before being tackled by two off-duty police officers.

Shopper Nancy Birnbaum told NBC: "I have never in my life felt so terrified.

"He pulled his sword out and everybody got back. I honestly thought that was it."

There were no injuries and police said the incident was not terror-related.

Another shopper, Giovanni Gabbani, attempted to speak to the man before he was tackled.

He told NBC: "We're all human beings, people have issues, I feel maybe he had some trouble and if I can talk to him and show him that people care, maybe that will diffuse and stop the situation."
