Kiwifruit pizza is now a thing - and people don't know how to feel about it

Thanks to the Greek-Canadian chef Sam Panopoulos, who introduced a pineapple-topped pizza in 1962, the world has become accustomed to the fruity flavour of the Hawaiian slice.

And while it may be customary for pizzerias to list Panopoulos' brain child on their menus, it doesn't mean its prepared for more funky flavours when it comes to the classic Italian meal.

After visiting Denmark, however, a tourist shared a snap of their pizza - which was not only finished with traditional tomato sauce and cheese, but also had a garnish of... kiwifruit.

Since, the photo of the kiwifruit pizza has gone viral - and people aren't sure what to make of it.

One person wrote: "Stomach churns at the thought."

Another added: "As much I love me some kiwis, even this is an abomination and an insult to pizza."

A third quipped: "That’s an abomination for sure too. It’s ok. There’s a pineapple pizza section in hell. Add kiwi and anything else that doesn’t belong on pizza in that same section in hell."

Some even added the kiwifruit pizza to a list of terrible things to have happened so far in 2020: "The World is going to hell. 1) pathologic lair, traitor, and racist a******* for a president. 2) possible war 3) Australia is on fire 4) kiwifruit on pizza is a thing."

That said, some people were open to the idea. One Twitter user commented: "I could almost taste the combined flavours of the cheese and kiwi — its saltiness and its sweetness and tartness respectively. Like it could be a good flavour combination much like that of cheese and grapes or berries."

"Yeah I'm curious if it would taste as how I am imagining it, which isn't too terrible, I suppose," another commented.

Of course, this isn't the first time an outrageous pizza topping has hit the headlines. Sweden serves up all kinds of variations on the doughy treat - from Pizza a la Duck, which not only has duck meat, but also mushrooms, blackcurrants and honey on it.

Another strange invention is the banana-topped savoury snack, again available in Sweden.
