Cars could have their speed automatically cut when it rains with sensors that respond to smart road signs.

German engineering giant Bosch has developed a safety system that is even capable of bringing a vehicle to a standstill if road conditions are particularly treacherous.

The smart road signs beam weather details of the maximum recommended speed to a sensor inside the vehicle, triggering its windscreen wipers and headlights — and even a “possible stoppage”.

The invention was revealed in a patent lodged with the Intellectual Property Office titled “method and device for operating a vehicle with respect to weather conditions”.

A Bosch spokeswoman said: “Road-sign recognition systems help drivers to navigate with the system’s video camera reliably reading road signs, variable message signs and overhead signage.”
