Californians who do not identify as male or female will soon be able to identify as a non-binary on state documents.

The measure, signed by California Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, will make it easier for people to change their gender on official documents.

Brown also signed a separate measure that allows people in prison to ask a court for a name or gender change.

The move was praised online as a step towards LGBTQ+ equality.

It comes as the state of Oregon approved a new rule in June which allows residents to mark their gender as “not specified” on applications for driver’s licences, learner’s permits and ID cards.

The “non-binary” option on official documents will come into effect in 2019.
