African refugees fleeing Ukraine facing ‘bloodshot racism’ treatment

African refugees fleeing Ukraine are being subjected to horrific racism, with reports of people being refused on public transport and sent to the back of queues.

British-Zimbabwean student Korrine Sky, 26, has recounted her horrifying ordeal on social media as she tried to escape the escalating conflict in Ukraine.

She said she had received “some threats of violence from some local Ukrainians who don’t believe we should enter” when she tweeted about her journey to the Romanian border.

Ms Sky also said she was put in a separate queue to non-Ukrainians who were “prioritised and taken to the front of border control”.

Also, Nigerian national Osrumen has told of the “bloodshot racism” he has seen while trying to make it out of Ukraine.

The dad-of-three said he and his family were forced to give up their seat on a us out of Ukraine, with the driver and military officers saying “no blacks” were the reason for this.

Osarumen, who has been living in Ukraine since 2009, told : “In all of my years as an activist, I have never seen anything like this.

“Then I look into the eyes of those who are turning us away, I see bloodshot racism; they want to save themselves and they are losing their humanity in the process.”

He continued: “This isn’t just happening to black people – even Indians, Arabs and Syrians and that shouldn’t be the case.”

It comes as the chair of the African Union, Senegalese President Macky Sall, and African Union Commission head Moussa Faki Mahamat said they were “particularly disturbed by reports that African citizens on the Ukrainian side of the border are being refused the right to cross the border to safety”.

The African Union has said “reports that Africans are singled out for unacceptable dissimilar treatment would be shockingly racist and in breach international law.”

Officials in Nigeria are urging Ukrainian authorities to treat its citizens equally.

Presidential adviser Garba Shehu said: “There have been unfortunate reports of Ukrainian police and security personnel refusing to allow Nigerians to board buses and trains heading towards the Ukraine-Poland border.”
