Woman dies following fire in flat in Bayswater

A woman has died after a fire in a flat in Bayswater, west London.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in Porchester Square just before 2am on Monday, March 8 and found a two-roomed flat on the fourth floor of a building on fire.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman from a communal hallway who was taken to hospital by ambulance but she later died.

The fire was brought under control just after 3am by crews, with around 40 firefighters from stations including Paddington and Kensington, at the scene.

The cause of the fire is being investigated though early reports said it had been started by an “unattended candle”.

A spokesperson for the Lonson Fire Brigade said: “Sadly a woman has died following a flat fire on Porchester Square in Bayswater.

“Most of a two-roomed flat on the fourth floor of the building was damaged by fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman from a communal hallway who was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews, where she sadly later died.”
