M1 crash: Two killed 'after car travels wrong way along motorway'

Two men have been killed in a motorway crash after a car was reportedly driving the wrong way along the M1.

Two vehicles, a white Ford Transit and a blue Mazda Premacy, were involved in the accident at junction 24 in Leicestershire at about 2am on Monday.

The driver of the Mazda, aged 87, and a 27-year-old passenger in the van were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are now investigating reports that a car was travelling the wrong way down the southbound carriageway of the M1 prior to the collision.

The M1 was suffering heavy traffic this morning and diversions were in place. Leicestershire Police warned motorists to avoid the area.

The Highways Agencies said drivers were facing delays of 90 minutes and that normal conditions would not resume until 12.30pm.

Anyone who has information about the incident or saw either vehicle prior to the collision is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident 23 of October 12 2015.
