Twitter has hit with technical difficulties this evening with many thousands of users unable to access the site at all.

Fans of the social networking site reacted with horror after Twitter went down just after 7pm today.

The site appeared to crash, displaying only a error message, and leaving people unable to send tweets or direct messages.

A message on the website read: "Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing—we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."

Many took to the UK's other big social networking site, Facebook, to report the problems with the site.

Stephanie Ogbogu wrote: "Twitter is down. I'm still phoneless. This is a terrible way to live."

While Nick Gangwer posted: "I realize how much of my life I waste when Twitter goes down and I sit here not knowing what to do." (sic)

And Marni Brewster said: "Twitter is down. There is no purpose to life."

The site was back up and running again about 15 minutes later, but some users were still experiencing problems.

In a statement Twitter said: "Some people may have briefly had problems accessing Twitter due to an internal error. This issue is now resolved."
