ORR’s report called for clearer information on ticket restrictions to be displayed on machines as well as less "industry jargon".
Phrases that the watchdog highlight for concern were ‘London Terminals’, ‘Any Permitted’, and ‘Anytime R’, short for anytime return.
ORR state in their report: “Improvements in the information provided by such machines – such as clearer information on ticket restrictions and less use of industry terminology or jargon – would assist passengers in making the best decision when buying tickets.”
The information in the report is taken from an audit of all train operators in November.
A Rail Delivery Group spokesman said: “Independent research carried out on behalf of the rail industry shows 19 out of 20 people using self-service machines get the right ticket for their journey, which is comparable to customers buying online.”
