Sword dancing Prince Charles cuts a dash in Oman

Prince Charles joined in with a sword dance today at a historic fort as his tour of the Middle East brought him to Oman.

He was handed the weapon and a shield for the traditional Omani dance after he and Camilla arrived at 12th-century Nizwa Fort. Shuffling from side to side, he brandished the weapon to the sound of music, copying the dancers.

As the royal couple toured the fort they were greeted by children waving Union Flags and met people weaving mats and baskets, some of which caught the Duchess of Cornwall’s eye.

When they were introduced to the market sellers, Charles said: “Let the shopping begin.” Camilla put aside a number of items, saying: “I love these baskets.”

As they left, Charles told organisers: “Can you thank them for arranging all this? It was wonderful. Ask them to make sure they keep the traditions going.”

Later today — the eighth day of a tour that has already taken in Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia — the Prince of Wales was meeting Omani farmers to learn about their irrigation methods, while his wife was visiting a diabetes research centre. Oman is one of the world’s 10 worst countries for diabetes.

The day was due to conclude with a spectacular horse riding display at the Oman Royal Cavalry HQ, featuring a polo match with team mates of Charles from 25 years ago. The couple are due to come home tomorrow after completing a final set of engagements.
