Passengers at London City Airport faced cancellations and four-hour delays due to foggy conditions while Norwich International Airport closed for a short time so that runways could be de-iced.
Forecasters warned that up to ten centimetres of snow could fall in the north-west, Wales and Midlands overnight, with blizzards, strong winds and icy conditions expected.
The cold snap is due to a weather system pushing in from the south-west, bringing snow and rain and exacerbated by strong southerly winds.
The AA warned motorists to take precautions when driving and to ensure they had adequate supplies of de-icer as well as warm clothes, food and a fully-charged mobile.
The breakdown service said it would have received more than 8,500 calls by the end of today, with frozen doors, petrol caps and handbrakes the main problems.
