Paris Brown's mother: My daughter is no racist

The mother of Britain’s first youth police commissioner today insisted her daughter wasn’t homophobic or racist as she defended her over her controversial Twitter comments.

Paris Brown, 17, has been forced to apologise after it emerged that she had used her social media account to boast about taking drugs and getting drunk as well as calling immigrants “illegals” and describing some people as “fags”.

Today Miss Brown’s mother Debra told the Standard that the teenager was “the best daughter she could wish for” but admitted she had been “disappointed” by the language she had used on Twitter.

Speaking from the family home in Sheerness, Kent, Mrs Brown, 48, said: “Paris has 14 GCSEs - she has never been a bad girl.

“We were very disappointed with the language she used and we have told her that.

“She has gay friends and friends from different races - what she wrote was stupid.

“She has apologised and now wants to get on with her life.”

Miss Brown, an office worker with Swale Borough Council, was only appointed to the £15,000-a-year role with the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office last week after beating 164 other applicants to the post, which was intended to act as a way for the force to engage and liaise with young people.

Her Twitter comments were made before she applied or got the job, but have provoked a storm of protest over her appointment.

In her postings, she talked about wanting to make “hash brownies” and of being high on “so many prescribed drugs” as well as becoming “anti-social, racist and sexist” when drunk.

In one posting two months ago she wrote: “F**cking hell why are the people from Direct Pizza so difficult to talk too!! IT IS CALLED ENGLISH. LEARN IT” while in others she referred to immigrants as “illegals” and travellers as “pikeys.”

Miss Brown said yesterday that her comments had been “naive and stupid” and insisted she had “grown up” since they were made, and Kent Police Commissioner Ann Barnes has said she sees no reason for the teenager to be sacked or resign.

Keith Vaz, chair of the Commons home affairs select committee, and a local councillor have called for her to be removed from the job.
