Oxford University reveals sample questions for interviewees... would you pass the test?

Oxford University is preparing this year's applicants by releasing a list of sample questions on everything from Coronation Street to why lions have manes.

The prestigious institution has revealed its annual list of example conundrums and brainteasers ahead of the application deadline on October 15.

The university releases a similar list each year, hoping to demystify the application process for bright youngsters who fear applying.

Prospective English literature students could be asked why they think Coronation Street has lasted 50 years, while those hoping to study philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) could face questions on the ethics of air travel.

Famous alumni of the oldest university in the UK include world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking and Emmy Award winning actor Riz Ahmed. This year's intake will study alongside Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who started her course in PPE earlier this month.

Interviewer Jon Herring, of Exeter College, said: "Students must be able to analyse concepts, critically appraise arguments and decypher the reasoning behind a position, all while considering objections and offering rebuttals to those objections.

"There isn't a right or wrong answer to these questions; we would be using the example to see how well the candidate could justify their stance."
