The head teacher of Haverstock School, where Ed Miliband was a pupil, today condemned a former teacher who organised a Lady Thatcher death party in Brixton, south London.
Craig Parr, 27, a special needs teacher was photographed holding a placard that read “Rejoice. Thatcher is Dead” at the demonstration on Monday night which ended two arrests.
John Dowd, Haverstock head, condemned Mr Parr’s behaviour “in the strongest possible terms” and revealed he resigned in February after concerns were raised about his conduct. Mr Parr did not answer the door today at his flat in West Norwood, south London.
Nick Clegg today called activists behind anti-Margaret Thatcher parties as “completely puerile.”
The Deputy Prime Minister said: “I don’t think they speak for the country at all, these people, who are jumping up and down with joy at her death.
“I just feel that it is totally out of step with what has, on the whole, been a pretty sombre and pretty grown-up reflection and debate on her passing away.”
It comes amid security fears that anti-Thatcher protesters could disrupt her funeral next Wednesday. Demonstrators are planning a “Maggie’s Good Riddance Party” outside St Paul’s.
Scotland Yard said it is working with City of London Police and British Transport Police on a security operation that is expected to cost around £5million. Thousands of police officers will be on duty in central London, mainly stretched along the route of the funeral cortege.
Commander Christine Jones, from the Met Police, said: “I would ask anyone who wishes to demonstrate to come and talk to us.
“The right to protest is one that must be upheld, however we will work to do that while balancing the rights of those who wish to pay their respects and those who wish to travel about London as usual.”
