Hats how it's done: array of headgear at Ascot Ladies' Day

From homemade creations to a hat displaying 300 poppies, an array of flamboyant headpieces were on display at Royal Ascot today as thousands of women visited the racecourse for Ladies’ Day.

More than 75,000 people were flocking to the racecourse for the Gold Cup, which is traditionally the busiest day of the meeting.

Lady Lucy French, 38, wore 300 poppies on her head to campaign for a series of temporary memorials to mark the centenary of the First World War, which she wore with a black dress suit and matching red nails. The hat was designed and made especially by Mark Humphrey.
