Mr Mastropietro has since transformed his cave into a modern, luxurious property with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living space.
Describing the finished home, he said: "It's beautiful, it's uplifting. It's got a certain magic. It makes you feel good being here - it's very relaxing.
"Whilst you're maybe a mile or so from the nearest supermarket, you're a thousand miles back in history".
