EastEnders actor Danny Dyer is related to Queen Elizabeth II, according to a BBC documentary on ancestry.

The 38 year-old actor, who plays pub landlord Mick Carter in the hit soap, found the astonishing connection when taking part in the new series of Who Do You Think You Are?

Researchers from the BBC programme made the shocking discovery when delving into Dyer’s East End roots.

A tv insider told the Mirror: “People will be flabbergasted to discover the famous royal Danny is descended from.

“When he found out he could hardly believe it himself. It makes for some gripping television.”

Dyer admitted he signed up to the show to ‘freak a few people out’.

The actor, who is the latest landlord of the Queen Vic, was born in Canning Town and began acting at the age of 16.

He then went on to star in films such as Human Traffic and Football Factory before signing up for a long-term role in Eastenders.

The 13^th series of Who Do You Think You Are, tracing the genealogy of hosts of stars including Sir Ian McKellen and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, will air in the autumn.

Danny Dyer is not the only actor to be related to her majesty, as Hollywood star Johnny Depp was revealed to be the Queen’s 20^th cousin.
