The survey, carried out by Ask Jeeves, found that the traditional method was dying out fastest in Wales, where less than half of the people surveyed used it, and strongest in the Southwest, where 94 per cent of people preferred the European style.
A spokesperson for the search engine blamed changing dining habits for the decrease in traditional dining etiquette, saying: "Dinner time in British households has changed significantly.
"Many families no longer eat together around the table so have not grown up with rules about what they should and shouldn't do."
