Chris Boardman: Olympic cyclist's mother dies after bike crash

Cycling hero Chris Boardman's mother has died after being knocked off her bike in a collision with a pick-up truck.

Carol Boardman was hit by the vehicle at a roundabout in the North Wales town of Connah' Quay on Saturday afternoon.

Today her son revealed the tragic news and said she had died in the early hours of Sunday morning from her injuries, paying tribute to his mother as the "most positive, outgoing person you could ever hope to meet".

In post on Twitter, he wrote: "In the early hours of Sunday morning, our mum, Carol Boardman, died from injuries sustained in collision with a car while out riding her bike in North Wales.

"A racing cyclist of some standing in her day, she gave up competitive cycling when Lisa and I came along but she never lost her love of the bike or of competing."

He added: "Our mum was the most positive, outgoing person you could ever hope to meet and her generosity of spirit inspired everyone she met."

Mr Boardman - who was awarded an MBE for services to cycling in 1992 and has fronted several campaigns aimed at getting Londoners on their bikes - said: "She leaves behind Keith, her partner for more than half a century, Lisa and I, and a large loving family.

"We cannot yet conceive of a world without her in it.
