Champagne loses its fizz as more people opt to drink Prosecco

Champagne appears to have lost its fizz, as revellers will apparently be more likely to pop a bottle of prosecco instead when the clocks strike midnight tonight.

Latest figures show sales of champagne have fallen flat, and drinkers are more likely to opening a bottle of Prosecco instead to see in the new year.

The milder taste and cheaper price of Italian Prosecco is tempting drinkers away from French champagne, and sales of the former have soared in the UK.

The value of Prosecco sales in the UK leapt by almost three quarters in the first six months of last year, overtaking champage for the first time.

Sales of English fizzy wine are also booming, with one in of every 50 bottle of fizzy wine sold last year grown in English vineyards.

In M&S English sparkling wine sales have risen by more than 300 per cent, while in Waitrose they have increased by almost 200 per cent.
