Boaty McBoatface has topped a public poll to name a £200 million research ship with 90,000 more votes than the second choice.
The suggested name put forward by former BBC presenter James Hand went viral and even crashed the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) website as people rushed to back it.
The group invited the public to submit ideas for the name the £200 million vessel should bear on its hull before a planned venture to Antartica.
Inspirational names such as historical figures or landmarks were requested but the public has backed Boaty McBoatface with 124,109 votes.
The nearest rival was Poppy-Mai with 34,245.
Usain Boat and What Iceberg? had been among nearly 7,000 other suggestions.
NERC said competition rules meant it would have the final say on any name given to the ship.
As the name’s popularity grew, Mr Hand tweeted an apology to organisers.
The £200 million vessel will be the largest and most advanced in the UK when it becomes operational in 2019.
The 128 metre long ship will sail the waters of the Arctic and Antarctic with its crew of 90 scientists and research staff.
Last month, a South West Trains guard renamed a London Waterloo bound train Trainy McTrainface in a nod to the saga.
