M25 traffic delays: Miles of tailbacks on motorway after vehicle bursts into flames

Drivers were today facing rush hour travel misery after a car burst into flames on the M25, causing up to 10 miles of tailbacks.

The silver vehicle was engulfed by fire at around 7.30am, forcing two lanes of the anticlockwise carriageway to close.

The driver escaped unharmed after the car caught fire near to Junction 11 for Chertsey.

Motorists were also stuck in up to six miles of traffic on the opposite carriageway, with queues extending back to the Wisley Interchange at Junction 10.

Surrey Fire and Rescue crews from Egham, Chertsey and Staines attended and the fire was extinguished at around 7.50am.

Surrey Police tweeted: "#M25 Jct 12 to 11 Vehicle Fire closing 2 lanes. @SurreyFRS on scene. Delays on approach."

An Egham fire crew spokesman said: "We were called to the incident at around 7.30am and left just after 8.30am.

"Pumps from Egham, Chertsey and Staines attended.

"We believe it was started from an electrical fault and the sole driver of the car was unharmed."
