Waterloo Station works next summer to cause travel chaos for commuters

Commuters have been warned they face travel chaos during redevelopment work at Waterloo station next summer.

Rail operator South West Trains advised passengers to take their holidays in August next year to avoid travel problems caused by the works.

In order to make way for longer trains, the station is closing nine platforms in the summer of 2017 - causing huge disruptions for passengers.

In a joint statement with Network Rail, South West said it is “asking passengers to plan ahead for major changes taking place at Waterloo”.

The “changes” are part of an upgrade plan that will see the station’s international terminal back in use and will build longer platforms to cater for more passengers.

Information on the rail company’s website says: “The impact on your journey will vary depending on when and where you are travelling.

“We are letting you know in advance so that you can start to think about your journey now.

“For example, if you are organising next year’s holiday you also might want to keep these changes in mind.

“We have chosen to carry out this work in August as fewer passengers tend to travel during the summer compared to other times of the year.”
