Twitter closes Vine video service

Twitter has today announced it is to axe its popular video sharing service Vine.

The company revealed the move in a blog post in an apparent effort to cut costs across the board as it prepares to shed nine per cent of its workforce.

However, no official reason for the decision was given.

The blog said: "Today, we are sharing the news that in the coming months we’ll be discontinuing the mobile app."

Vine, which launched in January 2013, originally allowed people to share six second long video clips which were looped.

The company said the website would remain open so users can see videos made in the past.

But there will be no way of creating or uploading new clips as it must be done within the app.
