New app MatchPint: sport + pint = appiness

With London celebrating the Games, the Diamond Jubilee and a spectacular line-up of culture this summer, couch potatoes might find themselves prised away from their widescreen and local at the sportiest time.

So how will we follow Wimbledon, the European Championships, the Olympics, the West Indies/South Africa Test series and the crucial European stretch of the Formula 1 season, without spending every waking minute on the sofa?

London entrepreneurs Dom Collingwood and Leo MacLehose think they have the answer. Their new app and website, MatchPint, lets sports fans find the nearest pub that shows the game they want to watch when they are out and about.

Unlike other sports pub listings, MatchPint works by each participating pub (there are hundreds across town, although it is stronger in central London) uploading the exact line-up of games they are showing every week so users don’t turn up at a pub to watch Andy Murray at Wimbledon, below, when they are showing the Euros — an important feature because the BBC and Sky are showing big events simultaneously on different services.

MatchPint tells users details like whether the pub will have the commentary volume on, whether it has an outdoor screen and how others have rated it out of five, and a social button tells Facebook friends which pub you are heading to.

The soon-to-launch BBC Olympics app will also come in handy. It will include all of the BBC website’s content — including 2,500 hours of video coverage — plus an offline reading feature, so fans can download all the stories when they are in a wi-fi hotspot and flick through them.
