Space: Mystery flashing light found behind a supermassive black hole for first time

Telescopes have picked up unexpected “luminous echoes” when researchers from Stanford University were examining a supermassive black hole 800 million light years away.

Scientists say this is the first time that light has been detected behind a black hole.

Because the gravitational pull from black holes bends light around themselves, this apparently gave scientists their first glimpse of what lies behind.

A tsunami warning was issued after a strong and shallow earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck the Alaskan peninsula late on Wednesday.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 10.15pm local time, happened at a depth of about 22 miles. The warning has now been dropped.

Data published in The State Of The UK Climate report reveals the average winter temperature for last year was 5.3C, which is 1.6C higher than the 1981 to 2010 average.
