Caroline Van Renterghem, founder and CEO of Wair, was inspired to design a wearable air purifier after struggling to breathe when cycling in Paris.

The Active device, due to retail for about £130, features a filter in the mask, which sends data to an app with advice on less polluted routes.

It is claimed the prototype can remove pollutants even smaller than deadly PM2.5 particles.

Ms Van Renterghem, 30, said: “We were inspired by scuba devices.

"It will be beneficial for cycling in London.”
