Google is celebrating renowned yoga pioneer BKS Iyengar with its latest animated doodle.
Iyengar is credited with doing more than anyone else to popularise yoga in the West.
He founded his own style of yoga, Iyengar, which is now taught in more than 70 countries and personally taught the likes of author Aldous Huxley and violinist Yehudi Menuhin.
The search giant’s special homepage is marking what would have been his 97th birthday.
Iyenha, whose full name was Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, died aged 95 in August last year.
He was born into a poor family in India in 1918, the 11th of 13 children, and struggled throughout his childhood with illnesses including malaria and typhoid.
He was introduced to yoga by his brother-in-law Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, himself a renowned figure often referred to as the “father of modern yoga”, in the hope of improving his health and by 18 had become a teacher in the Indian city of Pune.
His began to make an impression in the West after being invited to Switzerland by Menuhin in 1954, who had been impressed with him during a stay in Pune.
