She added: “In order for the Waspi women to get fair and fast justice, we have to get the government to make a decision.
“We think the government should be given some time and space to do that. But I don’t see any reason why they can’t come back early next week...with their response to this report.
“We will then respond to what they say. Let’s do this in the correct order. Let’s not let them off the hook.”
The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has asked Parliament to “act swiftly” to make sure a compensation scheme is established.
Waspi campaign chair, Angela Madden said: “This campaign has been going on for eight years.
“The ombudsman first concluded that DWP had committed maladministration three years ago.
“One thing Waspi women don’t have is time. One woman dies every 13 minutes.
“Ministers should be responding to this report and setting out a plan for compensation at the earliest opportunity.
“We also want to hear what a Labour government would do if they were in office.
“Labour MPs have long supported the Waspi cause.
“At this critical moment, we want to see the Labour leadership to step up that support, not step back.”
At least 11 shadow cabinet members, including Sir Keir Starmer, Yvette Cooper, Ms Thornberry and Angela Rayner, have campaigned for Waspi payments since 2019.
Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt said Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride is expected to appear in the House of Commons before the Easter recess to address the ombudsman’s recommendations.
