High earner

Do you think the first Budget under a Tory-only government for nearly 19 years will leave you better or worse off? “We feel quite confident about the economy. In terms of help from the Government, we’ve benefited from having apprentices in our warehouse. We’re a British manufacturer but it can be difficult to find factories in the UK because of the cost of land.

“It would be great if the Government could help us with tax breaks and business rates. We make everything from scratch in Park Royal and buy from local producers. Lower corporation tax or grants would help.”

Is George Osborne spreading the burden of austerity fairly? “I’m happy with the 45 per cent tax arrangement the way it is. I have been fortunate — I went to a grammar school and had free university education which has benefited me greatly so I like to give back by paying taxes. I support a London Living Wage because we employ a lot of Londoners and I would welcome an increase of personal allowance to £12,500. I don’t think the burden of austerity is fair, it’s fallen mainly on the less well-off.”

Disability benefits claimant

Romina Puma, 38

Job: cannot work; has facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. Campaigner for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Home: social housing flat in All Saints, east London.

Claims: disability living allowance £500; employment and support allowance £500; housing benefit (managed through Swan Housing Association).

Monthly outgoings: rent paid with housing benefit, £150-£200 on bills, £400 on food, £100 on travel.

Do you think the first Budget under a Tory-only government for nearly 19 years will leave you better or worse off? “At the moment, I can live quite comfortably within my means. I can live and have a life. But if any of my benefits were cut, I would be in real trouble. I would struggle to live as living with a disability like mine can be expensive. I think I could well be worse off in coming years. It is a real worry to me and a lot of my friends, and stress is not good for me or my condition.”

Is George Osborne spreading the burden of austerity fairly? “It always seems like the rich are being protected and the poor or the vulnerable not. I don’t think everyone should suffer cuts or tax reforms equally — I think those with more money should face more tax and more cuts than those with less. In terms of welfare, it does seem like a lot of disabled people are suffering.”

Healthcare worker

Binta Patel, 28

Job: GP trainee working on hospital rotation until qualification.

Annual salary: £28,000

Monthly outgoings: £400 mortgage; £100 council tax; £500 on food and eating out; £350 on travel.

Do you think the first Budget under a Tory-only government for nearly 19 years will leave you better or worse off? “I am in the middle in terms of earning and I don’t claim benefits, so that won’t hit me. I’m more concerned that the NHS will be left worse off. Cuts mean losing our hard workers, our paramedics, nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants and doctors. Worst-case scenario — the cuts make the NHS fall and we become a part-privatised system. Good-case scenario — we live a difficult life over the next decade to save some money and then see the economy grow and the money that was saved on the NHS can be returned to develop it.”

Is George Osborne spreading the burden of austerity fairly? “There will always be someone who will be upset, but the cuts are preventing an economic downfall. The tax bands are good for those not earning a great amount. However, you will lose those who are valuable to our economy because doing the hours they do will not be that beneficial to them, as they will pay more tax.”
