Ken Clarke defies PM with attack on Eurosceptics

Cabinet minister Ken Clarke broke ranks with David Cameron today to launch a pro-European fightback against the “lies” of Eurosceptics.

The former Chancellor was joining Lord Mandelson, the former Labour Cabinet minister, and Liberal Democrat Treasury Minister Danny Alexander to launch a campaign for Britain to take a more leading role in the EU.

Lord Mandelson will say at tonight’s drinks reception: “Those who want to destroy Britain’s interests and influence in Europe have been allowed to get away with murder with the lies and false propaganda they have poured out about the European Union and what it represents for our country. This cannot go unchallenged any more.”

Mr Cameron last week opened the possibility of Britain leaving the EU by promising a referendum by 2017.

Germany’s foreign minister Guido Westerwelle said Berlin was awaiting “concrete” proposals outlining Britain’s demands for new membership terms but warned against ultimatums. “There can be no cherry-picking. Saying ‘You either do what I want or I’ll leave!’ is not an attitude that works, either in personal relationships or in a community of nations.”

Tonight’s “patriotic fightback” echoes the campaign in favour of joining the single currency 15 years ago, which also brought together Mr Clarke, Lord Mandelson and Mr Alexander. Mr Clarke, minister without portfolio, has kept a low profile since the PM’s speech.
