Embassies refusing to pay Congestion charge will owe £100m when Boris Johnson quits

The overall figure has soared from £17.3 million to £95.3 million since Mr Johnson became Mayor in 2008. At the current rate, it will increase to more than £100 million by May next year.

Lib-Dem mayoral candidate Caroline Pidgeon, who collated the figures, said: “It is disgraceful that over £93 million is now being denied to Londoners by embassies and missions that dodge paying. The small number of embassies that think it is acceptable to evade paying the charge are insulting each and every Londoner.”

Mr Johnson said about two-thirds of embassies pay the charge and TfL “was pushing for the matter to be taken up at the International Court of Justice”.
