Chuka Ummuna engaged to lawyer girlfriend Alice Sullivan

Former shadow business secretary Chuka Ummuna is to marry his lawyer girlfriend Alice Sullivan.

An engagement notice was taken out in The Times on Tuesday by Miss Sullivan’s parents in consultation with the Streatham MP.

The notice read: "The engagement is announced between Alice Elizabeth Jane, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Sullivan of Pauntley, Gloucestershire and Chuka Harrison, son of Patricia Umunna and the late Ben Umunna of Streatham London."

Mr Umunna was an early favourite in the Labour leadership race, before he pulled out, saying he was uncomfortable with the “scrutiny” on his private life and the impact it would have on those close to him.

In a statement at the time Mr Umunna said: “I know this will come as a surprise to many but I had always wondered whether it was all too soon for me to launch this leadership bid - I fear it was.

"Most importantly, I continued to have very real concerns and worry about this bid's impact on those close to me.”

Mr Umunna told the Times he was “over the moon” with the news of his forthcoming marriage.
