War veterans to keep homes

War veterans who feared they faced selling their homes to cover a £550,000 shortfall in funding for the Bomber Command memorial in Green Park will not have to pay, according to the Prime Minister.

David Cameron has told Downing Street staff to work with government departments and mobile phone tycoon and philanthropist John Caudwell to find a way to plug the shortfall. Last night a spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has tasked Downing Street staff to find a way to fill this gap.”

Former Tory defence minister Sir Gerald Howarth said: “It would have been unthinkable that these guys should be required to dip into their own pocket. I know the Prime Minister has a deep affection for the Armed Forces and it is excellent news that this now looks like it is going to be resolved.”
