Speaking to the Standard today, Mr Loveday said he was "humbled and surprised" by the reaction to his performance.
He said: "It was just lucky that I got questions in the final that I knew about. I felt it was very much a team effort. I am happy we did it but winning was not really the point of it for us. We were in it to give it our best shot."
He partly attributed his success to memorising articles on Wikipedia about a wide selection of subjects.
He said: "University Challenge looks like it is very academic but a lot of the answers are out there on Wikipedia. But we did do a large amount of research too."
