This week in London: Tate Modern opens to the public in 2000

It was the week that saw the opening of the first female boutique in 1966 and the opening of the Tate Modern to the public in 2000.

In 1966, Londoners were surprised by the opening of the first female boutique in Carnaby Street. Hundreds of people gathered on the pavement to catch a glimpse of the female models, who posed in underwear at the shop’s windows for the first three days. Police were called to control the crowds, and arrested and fined one of the shop’s owners for obstructing the highway.

In 2000, the conversion of a former power station into a contemporary art gallery came to end as Tate Modern opened to the public. Despite the mix of reactions its interior design provoked at the time, the gallery, at Southbank, has since been visited my more than 40 million people.
