This week in London: Ken Livingstone elected as first Mayor in 2000

It was the week that saw thousands of bus drivers striking against the emergence of a new kind of digestive disorder in 1937 and Ken Livingstone being the first elected Mayor of London in 2000.

In 1937, 27,000 bus drivers staged a strike to highlight a new form of gastritis - known as "busman's stomach” – which they claimed it was rife among the work force. The strike went on for over a month leaving thousands of buses in the depot and bringing chaos to the capital.

In 2000, after being ostracized by the Labour Party, Ken Livingstone won the first mayoral election in London. Tony Blair, Prime Minister at the time, claimed Livingstone would be a 'disaster' as a Mayor. Nevertheless, the left-wing politician won again in the 2004 election.
