The Evening Standard today launches a unique venture to change lives in a troubled housing estate – and, in so doing, show how estates across the capital may be enriched.
Last week’s landmark investigation into Brixton’s Angell Town showed that even the most notorious estates hold within them the seeds of their own rebirth – and that unless we give local heroes the capacity to improve their neighbourhoods, gang turf war will fill the vacuum.
That is why we have put together a £150,000 pilot programme, backed by £100,000 from the global banking group Citi and £50,000 from the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund, of which I am patron.
The money raised will be used to empower local heroes – the “angels” of Angell Town – who are passionate about rebuilding their community.
We begin with the six “angels” pictured here who are seeking to deliver boxing, football, fitness, enterprise, food markets and excursions into London for the residents of their estate.
In the best traditions of this newspaper and following an extraordinary response from you, our readers, we will try to make a difference to the people of Angell Town.
