'Teacup pig' pop-up picnic in east London... but bacon's off the menu

London’s first micro-pig pop-up will let visitors pet a litter of new-born micro-piglets while enjoying a picnic and cocktails, with bacon strictly off the menu.

The London Pop-Up Pignic, organised by Yelp, will work with animal welfare groups to educate the public about owning micro-pigs in the hope of reducing the number of abandoned pigs.

Pet Piggies, one of the UK’s main micro-pig breeders, will be providing the litter who have not yet been born.

Breeder Mark Cox said: “This is to get the message out about how wonderful pigs are as pets but the public must be aware of the true size of so-called ‘teacup’ pigs which actually grow to be about the size of a bulldog.”

Micro-pigs are becoming popular pets in the UK as they are sociable and enjoy the company of people and other pets. They should not be kept solely inside and cost around £400-550.

The event will be held at The Proud Archivist Gallery in Haggerston on 21-22 May from 6-10pm and then from 23-25 May from 2-6pm. Prices are yet to be confirmed.
