Snow flurries make it a miserable Monday... and there's more to come

Londoners woke up to a dusting of snow today as Arctic conditions returned to the UK.

East London saw the heaviest covering, with more than an inch lining pavements and parked cars. South East London was also hit, while flurries were seen across west London later on in the morning.

Tube passengers suffered early-morning delays, with the conditions causing problems with the northbound section of the Jubilee line’s power supply.

Several flights were cancelled and there were delays of up to 90 minutes on early-morning flights at Heathrow, although these were caused by problems at the destination airports, with Geneva closed due to snow.

Forecasters predicted much of the snow would turn to sleet and rain later today, with the possibility of another light flurry tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to turn milder later in the week.

Further north there was much heavier snowfall with more than three inches of snow lying in the Midlands, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

This caused problems on the M40 overnight where a number of lanes had to be closed due to treacherous driving conditions.

Forecasters said the freezing weather was likely to return next week - though there was good news for families planning half-term skiing breaks.
