Back to safety: the tabby cat was thrown into the River Thames

The RSPCA is hunting for a woman who flung a cat into the River Thames.

Witnesses said they saw the middle-aged woman carrying a basket to Greenland Quay, Rotherhithe, at 8.30pm on July 28.

She took a tabby cat from out of the basket and threw it into the water.

Nearby members of the public raced to pull the cat to safety and she survived the incident.

She was taken into care by the RSPCA and has since been renamed Ariel after the Little Mermaid.

The woman was also walking a dog, which she tied to a post, and took away with her as she left the scene.

RSPCA inspector Callum Isitt said: “The incident was incredibly distressing for Ariel, and it is only due to the quick thinking of these kind-hearted members of the public that she was spotted and saved. “Who knows what would have happened to her if they had not been there.

“It is impossible to know what could have made this woman throw the cat into the water like that - but we are very anxious for anyone with any information about her to let us know.”
