A council spokesman said: “Our plans are to replace a derelict eyesore of a building and use half of its land for a new school and the other half of the existing hospital site which is all under concrete will be returned to the common and will be returned to grass land.”
The common was formed in 1871 when John Poyntz, 5th Earl Spencer, agreed plans with residents to enclose 700 acres of land to create Wimbledon and Putney commons.
