“The Blue Bridge is one of the most popular areas in St James’s Park and provides some of the best views across many of London’s iconic landmarks.
“It was an anonymous gift to the nation back in the 1950s, and it’s a bit like Marmite; while some people hate it others no doubt love it.”
Buckingham Palace was keeping out of the debate. A spokesperson said: “This is a matter for Mr Pritchard and Royal Parks who look after St James Park.”
The Blue Bridge is the third crossing at the site. The first was designed by John Nash, and was replaced by an iron suspension bridge in 1857.
