Mayor Sadiq Khan: HS2 'must find solution' to Euston station plans

This is despite the Standard revealing last month that HS2 chiefs were considering major changes to the planned redevelopment of Euston station.

The organisation is rethinking how trains and tracks are brought into the terminus in a bid to minimise the impact on locals. But in a letter to campaigners, Mr Khan warned that if changes to the existing proposals were not made soon, opportunities to reduce disruption and unlock regeneration would be lost.

He wrote: “I do not believe that HS2 can simply ride roughshod over people’s quality of life and livelihoods”.

Sir Tim Lankester, deputy chair of the residents group HS2 Into London, said: “It’s great the Mayor is pressing for a radical rethink of the route into Euston. The current plans would bring years of chaos and destruction to Camden and the surrounding area and massive disruption for passengers on existing services.

“It’s time government started listening. Until a new plan for Euston is agreed, all preparatory work there should be halted.”

A DfT spokesman said a revamped Euston will play “a crucial role”, enabling passengers to travel directly into central London as quickly as possible.

He added: “While Old Oak Common is a vital connection, terminating there would not provide the same benefits as a proposed terminal at Euston.”
